Question.3427 - Module 4 Assignment This week we will begin using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) to prepare data and conduct statistical analyses. SPSS is not free to the public, it is proprietary (for profit) and owned by IBM. You can get free access to SPSS this semester because you are a CSUEB student and the University pays for the license. 1. As soon as possible, request a copy of SPSS from the University. Email: stsc@csueastbay.edu Tell them SPSS is required for your course and give them the course number. You must provide your Net ID and operating system information. You must use a Mac or PC, not ChromeBook. SPSS will not work on cell phones, ipads, or tablets. Note that you might have difficulty downloading or running SPSS on a Mac with a newer operating system. If this happens, you will need to contact IT for assistance. For technical support, contact the Library Learning Commons . They have student assistants that can provide help. If necessary, they can provide a zoom appointment. In some cases (e.g., if you have a chromebook) you could get a loaner laptop from them to be able to use SPSS. They have study rooms as well. Heres their contact information: Techelp@csueastbay.edu and (510) 885-4152. They are located on the 1st floor of the CORE building. Look at the Basic SPSS Practice Worksheet Ive posted on Canvas under this module. This is a brief, made-up data set I created for practice. I entered the values into a table in a Word document. Watch my three SPSS videos on entering data, writing syntax, and descriptive statistics. My examples might use a different data set or variables, but they will demonstrate everything you need to know to complete this assignment. Follow my video instructions and enter the basic practice data from the worksheet into SPSS. Dont try to copy and paste the whole table. Enter each value, one at a time, as Ive demonstrated in the video. Make sure to save your data set onto your computer. Then complete worksheet item #s 2, 3, & 4. Results of analyses you run will appear in an output window. Save your complete output window onto your computer, in addition to your revised data set (it will contain new variables that you have created). These will be two separate files. Email both files to me as attachments. Remember to include PSYC 300 and your last name in the subject line. Assignment is worth 10 points as follows: 2 pts Data accurately entered into the dataset you email to me (worksheet item #1) 2 pts Dataset includes accurate creation of two new variables (a mean score and a sum score) created via syntax; these variables should appear toward the end of the data set you email to me (worksheet item #2) 2 pts Dataset includes accurate creation of a median split variable created via syntax; this variable should appear toward the end of the dataset you email to me (worksheet item #3) 4 pts Accurate descriptive statistics shown in output file you email to me (worksheet item #4)
