It is clear that the North was victorious in the military battle and had won the war. However, peace was still in doubt. Both sides almost immediately were attempting to ensure that the war "meant" something by pushing political, cultural, and social agendas. From the North's perspective the war was an opportunity to radically change the outlook of the nation. As for the South, they wanted to concede as little as possible and return to pre-war life. Numerous different plans for Reconstruction were presented and each plan had areas of willing concession and others of no compromise. As time progressed, philosophies changed but ultimately the post-war America was still geographically divided. Clearly, slavery was the central argument point and with Northern victory it was officially abolished. Yet, the era known as Reconstruction has historically been declared as a failure. For this discussion, consider who was more successful between 1865- 1877 in accomplishing their objectives, the North or the South? There is no denying that the North won the war... but did that victory continue into the years after?Another way to consider the question would be to determine if the era was driven by notions of word choice- scholars have studied the era through the perspective of "reconstruction", "reconciliation", "remembrance", "redemption", and others.
