Question.3488 - Research Paper Topic and Our Initial Discussion... Hello class. This semester we will write a college-level Research Paper during the last several weeks of class. I will introduce our topic to you now, but we will spend the entire semester dissecting and analyzing this topic. By the later stages of the semester (when we really start to focus on writing our Research Paper), we will already have some knowledge and some thoughts about this topic, and we will have a good sense as to where we want to go with our research. The topic for our research centers around the "global population" and the issues the human race faces with having such a large population. As I said, this topic will be introduced more formally as we go along, but for our first discussion here in Week 1, I want you to watch the video I've provided. After viewing this short video and considering it, we can then have a group discussion and share our initial thoughts and ideas about this topic. I will monitor this discussion throughout the week, and I will include my own thoughts as well. Here is a breakdown of some of the areas we want to focus on in our discussion: The Causes: As we can see from the video, the global population never exceeded one billion people before the year 1800, so what caused our population to grow so quickly over the last two hundred years? The Issues: When we start to think about all the issues that come along with having such a big population, we can easily get overwhelmed. For example, how do we feed all of these people? What happens when our fresh water supply runs out? How do we prevent disease from wiping everyone out? And what about jobs! How can we provide all these people with a steady job? What about health insurance? These are only only a few of the issues that stem from having such a big population... there are many more. Ideally, we will want to develop potential solutions for the issues we see, so our research papers this semester will be "solution-based" research papers. It's one thing to simply dissect the issues that we see, but it's something completely different to develop potential solutions to these issues. So, as we go along with this topic, we always want to be thinking about potential solutions to the issues we're focused on.
