Question.3489 - Question: So, our Research Paper topic this semester is about the global population. Currently, 7.7 billion people live on this planet, and the projections suggest that by 2050 the population will be around 10.5 billion. We know that the global population never exceeded 1 billion people prior to the year 1800, so there are many questions to consider about this topic, and there are many issues that are associated with having such a large global population. For example: Why now? That's a good question to ask. If people have been on this earth for over 200,000 years, why has the population increased eight times in the last 200 years? Is it only because of the advancements made in science and medicine, or could there be other reasons? For example, the simple invention of soap allowed people to regularly clean themselves, and this thwarted off diseases and unsanitary conditions. People stayed alive longer because they were cleaner. Also, the invention of electricity and household plumbing... these too, are developments that kept disease and the cold away. Our ability to refrigerate food is another reason. So, as a class, we might say that it was simple advancements made in science and medicine and technology, but when we start to look closer, we begin to see all these little advancements that really assisted in that process. What about food and clean water and jobs? If our population is 8 times bigger than it ever was before, how can we ensure that all these people have jobs that they can survive on? How can we make sure all these people have adequate healthy food supplies and fresh water to drink? Personally, when I go food shopping, I NEVER use the self check-out aisle because in my mind that should be a job that someone is getting paid to do! Do you agree or disagree with this? Sure, I understand the reasons why that computerized self-check-out line exists... but do I really? Isn't it because major corporations will invest the initial $50,000 to have a self-check-out cashier that will eventually save them money? And isn't it because that computer cashier can't steal from the company? Isn't it because the computer cashier won't ever be late to work (unless broken), and isn't it because that computer cashier will never be bitchy to a customer? Isn't that the reason why companies are doing this? But that is a job that could/should be done by a human being, a human being that gets paid to do that job... right? If technology is so advanced that it takes jobs like this away, then what different jobs are taking their place? I mean, at one time, not long ago, that supermarket cashier job was a job a high school kid had. That was a job that my grandmother had after she retired. So, if those jobs are being diminished, then what other jobs are taking place of them? I mean, when I was younger and I wanted to park my car in a parking lot somewhere, I had to pay a guy/girl who sat in a little booth. They took my money and I parked. So, where did that job go? Why do I now have to slide my money into some slot on a bulletin board, or slide my credit card into some machine? I mean, that was a JOB that someone was being paid for! Where has that job gone? Where have all those jobs gone? So, if the population is growing, and jobs like this are diminishing... what do we have to say about that? So, when I think about "jobs" in relation to our research paper topic, I can see the direction our world is headed in. I can see it all around me. Therefore, if I wanted to focus my research on jobs as it relates to the global population, I think there's lots I could say about a topic like that. And, if the research paper I was writing was a "solution-based" research paper, like the one we're writing is, then what sort of solution could I come up with for that issue. This is a good example of the sort of thinking that we'll need to do with our research papers this semester. Question: When was the last time you had to provide yourself with health coverage? Well, I recently had to, and it costs me nearly $800 a month for that insurance. I mean, I can own a house for less than that! I can fly to Japan for that. I can change my wardrobe for that. Why is it so expensive? Why is it that we can get 75 jobs offered to us that don't include health insurance, but we can't find one full-time job that does offer these benefits? Think about that for a minute... Maybe you're of a different opinion, and that's fine, but aren't these individual issues part of the larger problem? Aren't these issues worthy of our discussion? The question of why health insurance is so expensive is a really good one, and I think a great research paper could be written on this topic. Why doesn't this country have a universal health care system like other countries do? It's all comical in one way, and it's all very scary in another way. This semester you'll have to read the essay College Pressures, and the author of that essay talks about how much it cost a student to go to YALE University for one year back in the early 70's... it cost $7,000. Think about that for a minute! It cost $7,000 a year back then! Nowadays it costs nearly $90,000 to go to Yale for a year. I mean, my daughter was on the hook for 50K a year to go to Leslie University in Cambridge, and she did well and she graduated, but now she's got a mountain of debt she has to pay. Why is college so expensive these days? If our population is so big, and growing, doesn't it make more sense that college would be cheaper, not more expensive? And it's not just a little more expensive, it's WAY MORE expensive. And what does "society" tell us about people who don't go to college? Doesn't society say that if we don't go to college, then we won't get a good job and we'll struggle to make ends meet? And if we can't get a good job, then we won't be successful in life... isn't that what society tells us? Can you see how all of the issues I've discussed so far are interconnected? And if baffles me why the cost of living is so much more than it used to be. I mean, when I was a kid in the 1980s, one income could raise a family of 4 just fine, but nowadays, that same family of 4 needs at least 2 or 3 jobs just to get by. And those jobs don't usually offer health insurance either. Fact: the typical monthly health insurance premium for a family of 4 is close to $2,500. Isn't that insane? But isn't this what corporations want? Don't these corporations want every American to be in debt right out of college? I mean, how else do credit card companies and insurance companies make money? Don't they thrive off the debt of people? And if the "design" for this country is that every 24 year old have a mountain of debt after college, then what does that say to you? What does that mean to you? Are you okay with this for yourself and your children? Interesting stuff, right? Kinda scary. I've obviously thought about certain issues that stem from this main topic of the population, and I hope you begin to question these issues in a similar way. Our Research Paper is NOT designed to merely dissect the problems we see though; ideally, we want to come up with potential solutions to these issues as we see them. So, our conversation should start now. We should talk these issues through. We should listen and learn from each other. We should turn over every stone to see what's hiding underneath.
