Question.3446 - Week 1 Discussion 1 (Chapter 1) Points: 14 points for complete the questions with a minimum of 500 words (for the entire set of question and not for each question) and including relevant course material in your answers (note citing the book and/or lecture is required). 6 points for completing 2 reply posts of substance (remember discuss the content for this week including your opinion, a different perspective on the topic, and/or additional information on the topic or from the course material). Total: 20 points For this class, the discussion questions will be divided between three different groups. You will be assigned to the same group for the duration of the course. Each week there will be a question(s) assigned to the group you are in. Please note this is not a group project. Yes, you are assigned to a group. However, you are simply answering, on your own, the question(s) assigned to the group are assigned to. The purpose of the groups is so that we can cover more course material without giving you excessive homework. The system is not supposed to allow you to view your peers' work until you complete your post. This is to help prevent cheating or plagiarizing. So, before you read and reply to other students’ posts, you must post your own answers. When posting your answers, cite your sources. If you are using the textbook, a simple in-text citation (parenthetical citation) is fine. Remember citing the book and/or lecture material is required for credit. Example: (Janda et al. 22) - authors of the textbook followed by a page number If using outside sources, please provide a reference at the bottom of your work so that the rest of us can find the source you used. Group 1: Students with the last names that start with A-G: Americans often refer to each other as either liberal or conservative. Why is this distinction inadequate to address and categorize the different ideological perspectives held by Americans? You might, for example, think about the fact that people do not easily fit into one ideological box. Despite the problems with labels, how can an understanding of the original and modern dilemmas of government (freedom v order and freedom v equality) expand and clarify our understanding of ideological categorizations (such as conservative) and/or policy choices? Give an example of a general type of policy, for example less business regulation, you believe each of the following ideologies would support and one they would reject: liberals, conservatives, libertarians (two for each for a total of six examples). Word Association: Name the three words that come to mind when you think about politics! Group 2: Students with a last name that start H-0: Discuss the difference between classic liberalism, new liberalism (see the web link in the supplemental material link) and social justice. As discussed in the supplemental material, what is social justice? Which model (class or new liberalism) fits the ideological views of libertarians today? Which one fits the ideological views of modern liberals? Finally, how does each of these concepts fit into the lecture discussion of the potential rub between capitalism and democracy (by rub I mean how the two sometimes conflict)? Why do people sometimes have negative feelings about politics? What is politics, and what is it about politics, that creates such contention? How does political conflict relate to scarcity? Word Association: Name the three words that come to mind when you think about politics! Group 3: Students wtih a last name that starts with P-Z: Equality is a complex concept, and promoting it is at times controversial. Describe the various meanings of this concept. When discussing equality, which form of the word do you feel government should support and promote? Why? Discuss the difference between order in the narrow and broad sense (social order). Why is promoting social order so controversial? Can the narrow sense of the concept of order (protection of life and property) also be controversial? Give an example. Word Association: Name the three words that come to mind when you think about politics! Due Dates There are two parts to this discussion. Part 1 Your Post: Answer the questions assigned to the group you are in. Label your answer/post with your name and the group that you are in. Your post is due Sunday, August 18 @ 11:59 p.m. Part 2 Your Reply Posts: Reply to at least TWO your fellow students' posts or a post/comment that I make in the discussion thread. At least one of your replies must be to a student who is not part of your group. This is due Sunday, August 25 @ 11:59 p.m. Make sure to review the requirements of posts and reply posts listed in the course syllabus.
