Question.5169 - The Affect of RaceHey everyone, for this discussion I want you to think about how race still plays a factor in your life. Is it an everyday issue, or is does it affect you on certain occasions? Write 2-5 paragraphs, here is an example:Remember the quote about racism as pollution? Race may not always play an overt role in my life, but it may in many covert ways. When I am in faculty or staff spaces, I have had people walk up to me and ask "can I help you?" with the assumption that I am a student looking for a professor. When I tell them "no because I'm faculty," they often remark about how young I look. This occurs whether I am in a Nike Tech suit (which is understandable) or in slacks and a polo or button up shirt. While there may be some validity to my youthful appearance, (Black don't crack) I believe that they are shocked to see a young Black male in such a position as well.that they are shocked to see a young Black male in such a position as well.In a more serious situation, I was walking and a police car pulled up on me and officer jumped out of the car while the car was still on the street. I was asked for my ID. After giving it to the officer, he told me that I essentially "fit the description" of a robbery and murder suspect. Apparently someone called the police on me while I was walking (a route I walk daily by the way). I later told my barber about it and then overhear someone else talking about how there was someone wanted for a robbery and a murder. My barber looked up the picture of the suspect (a clear surveillance photo) and we look nothing alike. This happened in 2024.W.E.B. DuBois wrote about a concept called double consciousness; double consciousness is the understanding of how you are perceived through the eyes of others racially. It is mostly used to explain how people of color think when they are in white spaces where there is a chance of conflict or discrimination. Double consciousness is being aware of a police car from a mile away or being in at a store in Marin County and noticing the clerk at the store being over attentive to you instead of others. I notice others notice me and I even see fear in their faces at times. I've also have had conversations with older European Americans and seen a change in demeanor or even pleasant shock when learning of my education and profession. If you do not have had such experiences or feel that race has not played a part in you interactions at any time, explain why, is it because your demeanor? Do you rarely associate with different ethnicities and races?
