All you have to do to be a scientist is have an open, beginner's mind, ask questions, and be curious. Yet for most of the history, and certainly most of the time since the scientific revolution took off in Europe several hundred years ago, only some people (mostly the wealthy, aristocratic sons of prominent European and American families) have been recognized as "legitimate scientists," while everyone else was excluded. This doesn't mean no one else did science: far from it. But it does mean that a lot of scientists were ignored and sidelined in their day and have largely been erased from the history books. One such scientist who is a hero of mine is Mary Anning. Mary was a poor, working class woman who lived on the southern coast of England in the early 1800s, yet she made some of the greatest contributions to the fields of geology and paleontology of all time. Mary is also the origin of the popular English rhyme, "She sells sea shells down by the sea shore." Bet you didn't know that, did you? And now you do :) Until very recently, her story was virtually unknown, the product of deliberate exclusion. Fortunately, that is changing. Steps:I want you to read two online articles about Mary, by Marie-Claire Eylott and Katie Pavid of the UK's Natural History Museum. The first article is focused on Mary's life, the second on how an 11-year old girl from Mary's home town got a statue made in her honor.Watch this short video describing Mary's life in visual and auditory format, by Extra History.Feel free to research more about her life; she was quite remarkable despite everything she had working against her.Write an essay reflection on three of her discoveries or life experiences that you found remarkable or interesting. These could be scientific discoveries she made, how others perceived her or treated her, or some of the historical 'firsts' that came about because of her work. Mostly, I just want you to discover one of my heroes and realize that literally anyone can be a scientist.Module 7 Assignment.docx
