Almost no one believed him, however, because he had no way of explaining how this could happen. The idea became so vilified, in fact, was enough to destroy the career of any earth scientist. So how did we ever figure out that, in actual fact, the continents do move around? How was this idea revived and proved?Enter another of my heroes, the cartographer, geologist, and oceanographer Marie TharpLinks to an external site.. Though she was not allowed to get a PhD or become a professor because she was a woman, she figured out before anyone else that there was a rift valley in the center of the Atlantic Ocean and hypothesized that the seafloor was ripping apart there, forming the Atlantic Ocean and pushing North America and Europe apart. Her idea was dismissed as "girl talk," but when she subsequently showed that there was a rift valley just like the one she had discovered in the Atlantic at the heart of every ocean—and that earthquakes occurred within every single rift valley she discovered—her colleagues were forced to concede she had been right all along.Of course, not being a professor, she was not allowed to publish papers by herself or present her ideas at conferences. She wasn't even allowed to go to sea on research vessels. As a result, the names of other scientists appeared first on works containing her revolutionary ideas, or else she was left off completely, and she has largely been sidelined and erased from the story of the discovery of plate tectonics. Don't let the biased history fool you, though—Marie revived a hypothesis considered so dead and absurd that no "real" scientists at the time would touch it and turned it into the foundation of modern earth science today. One of the goals of this assignment is for you to discover that science isn't just a set of steps you follow while conducting research—it's also a community of people (scientists) with culture, social customs and norms, and flaws like any group of humans. In particular, scientists often act as gatekeepers, including deciding who gets to be considered a scientist and whose voices are considered credible.Steps:In this assignment, do the following:Watch this short videoLinks to an external site. briefly summarizing Marie's life and scientific contributionsRead her storyLinks to an external site. in her own wordsReflect on her experience in your course journal. Write a short essay (3-5 paragraphs) recording your reflections. To guide you, respond to any of the questions below that speak to youIn what ways does Marie's experience reveal the emotional, psychological, and social elements of science? In short, in what ways does it reveal that the process of science isn't purely objective or rationalWhat inspired you about Marie's story? Has your perception of science or what it means to be a scientist changed as a result of reading her story? Are there any lessons from Marie's story that you find relevant to your life today? In what ways is Marie an example of beginner's mind applied to the science?Upload your essay reflection as a Word document here.Course AI policyIf you use AI to complete the assignment, make sure and cite any text, images, or other content you include in your assignment that was generated by AI. This means putting in in quotations and citing where it came from, just like citing any other outside sourceI don't care about the specific format used to cite AI (MLA, APA, etc.), just make sure you include these four things:Put text in quotes; add a caption to imagesGive the AI tool name (e.g., Gemini, ChatGPT, etc.), version number, and date you used itInclude the full prompt you used to generate each piece of content. You can include the above info at the end of your assignment in a "sources cited" section if you wantIncluding AI-generated text and images in an assignment without doing the above constitutes academic dishonestyIf you need a refresher, watch this video where I explain the AI policy in more detailHow this assignment will be graded:Like the essay reflection on Mary Anning in the previous module, I will be looking for beginner's mind and completeness rather than polished language style or grammar. For a perfect score, show me that you are exploring the social and human dimensions of science.
